Uncles and Aunties - Wendy

In Singapore, and many Asian cultures, it is customary to address men of an older generation as ‘Uncle,’ and women as ‘Auntie.’ This warm expression conveys a sentiment of trust and respect.

This photo series captures the typical Singaporean ‘uncle and aunties’ that can be spotted relaxing around the Hawker Centers and HDB public spaces.

During a morning walk, I witnessed this ‘aunties’ weekend routine unfold in the public space at the foot of an HDB. She arrived with a caddie, from which she pulled a large boombox, and her fans. After a short setup, she began a graceful choreography.
